Position Title: Public Services Associate – Youth Focus
Hours: Part-time, 29 hours/week
Reports to: Youth Services Manager
Starting Wage: $18.36/hour
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Position Closing Date: Open until filled
Position Summary: Provides direct public service to all library patrons, with a focus on children and teens. Plans and implements a wide variety of programming for youth of all ages and their families. Cooperates as a team member with all library staff in performing any duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations. Acts in charge in the absence of a manager, as assigned. This job requires the application of basic library and information science principles to assignments.

- Assists patrons on the selection of library materials and resources.
- Answers reference and information questions and conducts research when needed.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates various types of library programs.
- Provides outreach services within the community.
- Assists with collection development, including making ordering recommendations, weeding, and maintaining collections.
- Plans and prepares displays, bulletin boards, and reading lists.
- Assists with publicizing library programs, materials, and services.
- Gives presentations to community groups.
- Represents the Library at outside events.
- Cultivates and maintains relationships within the community.
- Attends professional meetings and serves on committees.
- Assists with training new staff.
- May oversee specific services in a library department under the supervision of a manager.
- May act as person in-charge of the building in the absence of a manager.
- Resolves problems and responds to complaints.
- Performs circulation functions as needed.
- Keeps abreast of current professional trends.
- Promotes and maintains a thorough knowledge of library services and programs.
- Special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Must have a customer-focused mindset.
- Knowledge of library services and ability to learn basic library science techniques.
- Ability to learn and implement best practices within the position focus areas.
- Knowledge of the community preferred.
- Ability to use and learn a variety of technologies.
- Ability to assess and meet community and patron needs.
- Must be team-focused, flexible, and willing to provide service to all ages and backgrounds.
- Must be inquisitive and eager to learn new things.
- Must have a track record of initiative, enthusiasm, and a passion for community engagement.
Minimum Training, Education, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Related experience strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- This position requires stationery and mobile activities.
- Must be able to bend, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Other:
- Schedule will include daytime, evening, and weekend hours (including Sundays), and may include six-day workweeks.
- The successful candidate will have excellent attendance habits and be comfortable working as an in-charge person as needed.
