I am thrilled to start this New Year as the director of Ritter Public Library. The staff, trustees, and supporting organizations are exceptional. Thank you to all who have welcomed me so warmly. I am proud of my professional record of building trust with communities and managing significant responsibilities in a friendly way. I have relocated to Ohio fromNew Hampshire where my first director role began in 2000 at a small community library; after five years there, I moved on to a library many times larger, and served as director there for fifteen years. This is an exciting time for Ritter Public Library and for Vermilion as a whole, as we reflect on all that we have been through in the past few years, embrace the opportunities of the present, and prepare for the future. I am eager to work with the library staff to welcome you with the many excellent programs, services, and collection materials that you have always counted on, and to continue with our mission to enrich, empower and entertain. Sandra Licks, Director meet our new director new year, new skills This time of year always makes me want to rewatch all the Gilmore Girls episodes. “I smell snow,” anyone? If you’re a big Gilmore Girls fan, you’ll understand the quote. Anyway, when you are stuck cooped up at the house or looking for something to do, I want to remind everyone that the library is your place for all your needs. With our adult programming, we are dedicating this season to those locals sticking around through this cold season and looking to start a new hobby or learn a new skill. The new year brings classes like sewing, watercolor painting, or delving into the archaeological history around us with the Sandusky Bay chapter of the Archeological Society of Ohio. Check out the program calendar on the following pages for even more. Another service I would love to bring to your attention is our monthly passive programming! Passive programming is something we offer perpetually, so that you can easily participate while you are here, even if only briefly. This January, check out “23 books for 2023.” This activity will be fun for the entire year and will nudge you to expand your reading horizons or pick up something you might not normally read. With that, have a wonderful winter season, and just remember, “everything’s magical when it snows.” If you know, you know. Jessica Dufner, Adult Services Manager early literacy kits expand young minds Our new Early Literacy Kits can help babies and young children develop language and literacy skills during those critical early years. The kits include a variety of books, toys, and games that promote learning. The kits are available for checkout in the children’s department. The library was able to acquire these kits using funding courtesy of the Ritter Public Library Foundation in partnership with the Hindmarsh Project. The new early literacy kit themes include animals, baby sign language, and colors, among others. summer sneak peek The youth services department has held family fun events during the fall to encourage families to stay active and involved in the community. Programs can always be found on the library website. Though we may have a long winter still ahead, we are already busy planning for another awesome summer reading programwith the theme of All Together Now: friendship and unity. The library staff look forward to seeing children of all ages join in the summer fun! Look for details coming soon about registration. The Ritter Public Library Foundation is funding the purchase of two interactive digital tables. One will be placed in the Children’s department, the other in the Community Engagement Room. The newmulti-touch tables will offer a selection of multiplayer games. Kids and families will enjoy options like tic tac toe or educational spelling games, while more advanced users like teens and adults can try competitive Sudoku or classics like dominoes. The interactive tables will join other recent contributions from the Foundation, including the newmobile device charging station in the library commons. The self-service charging station allows patrons to secure their device in a locked compartment, foundation funds new tech and features both USB-C and Lightning cables to charge a variety of devices. The Ritter Public Library Foundation appreciates gifts of any size, if you would like to make a contribution toward the interactive tables. The Foundation works to bridge the gap between the library’s needs and state funding, to ensure that our library remains one of the best in the area. This new equipment allows patrons to convert VHS and other tapes to digital files. While the Creative Space currently contains only a VHS player for file conversion, the Elgato equipment is compatible with any device with an RCA output. Patrons are welcome to bring their own camcorder or other compatible device to use with the equipment. Dance, play, create, read, sing, and learn during this emotion-packed storytime! Wild Safari Storytime Journey through the jungles, savannahs, and wildernesses in search of the most exciting animals kids can imagine. Adventure Storytime We’ll explore new places and the animals that live there through themed stories and crafts. Paws & Pages Tuesdays 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM Third Saturdays 10 AM - 12 PM Fiona the Golden Doodle, the library’s reading dog, visits so that kids can practice their reading and petting skills. Best for toddlers through school-age children. Lego Club Second Saturdays 10 AM - 12 PM Come build a Lego masterpiece, then have your creation displayed at the library for all to see! All ages welcome. Pokémon League Third Saturdays 10 AM - 12 PM Bring your cards and handheld games to battle and trade with fellow Pokémon masters. Best for Ages 8 - 12. Children Storytimes Enjoy themed storytimes Mondays through Thursdays at 10 AMwhile storytime is in session. Each storytime session is 6 weeks long, with a 2 week break.
